Being a teenager in today's world is complicated with multiple stress factors: academic pressures, social media stress, family health and financial worries, and challenging peer relationships. Many teens today are struggling to cope effectively and the data shows that teens are increasingly confronting issues related to their own mental health. Instances of major depression, bouts of anxiety and hopelessness, difficulties with attention, as well as thoughts related to suicide have all increased in the last decade.
DBT, which stands for Dialectical Behavioral Therapy is a broad based cognitive-behavioral treatment known for its effectiveness in helping individuals who experience chronic emotional dysregulation or a pattern of self-destructive behaviors. Comprehensive DBT includes structured skills training, a component that has been shown effective with multiple populations - children, teens, young adults who are experiencing a wide range of clinical issues - depression, anxiety, substance abuse, eating disorders, as well as those experiencing attention issues and executive functioning challenges. DBT can include individual therapy and group skills training. It requires a commitment of time, money, and prioritization, AND the therapeutic benefits can be LIFELONG!
